Perplexity Optimization

Show up in the numbered sources on Perplexity

Perplexity searches the web live and shows its sources right next to the answer. Researchers, analysts and B2B buyers use it heavily. We help them find you there.

Quick answer

How does Perplexity choose its sources?

Perplexity runs a live web search for each question, reads the top results with its own crawler, and cites the passages it used as numbered sources. It favors pages that load fast, answer the question directly, include specific facts and dates, and come from domains with a clear reputation on the topic.

Perplexity rewards specifics and punishes fluff

Because it shows sources openly, Perplexity leans on pages that contain checkable facts: numbers, definitions, steps, prices and named methods. Marketing pages full of adjectives rarely make the cut.

It also crawls in real time. If PerplexityBot is blocked, rate-limited or served a blank JavaScript shell, you simply are not considered.

The good news: changes register quickly. A well-structured page can start appearing as a source within days of publishing.

FAQ

Perplexity: common questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, ask us on a call and we will add it.

Is Perplexity worth optimizing for?

For B2B, finance, software and research-heavy purchases, yes. Perplexity users are often professionals comparing options in detail, and every answer links its sources, so a citation sends qualified visitors. It is also the fastest engine for testing whether content changes work.

How quickly does Perplexity pick up changes?

Often within days. Perplexity crawls live when someone asks a question, so an updated page can be read the next time a related query runs. That makes it different from models that depend mostly on training data, where changes take months to show.

Does Perplexity use Google rankings?

Not directly. Perplexity runs its own retrieval and uses several search sources, so rankings overlap with Google but are not the same. We track Perplexity citations separately because a page can be cited there while sitting on page two of Google.

What content does Perplexity cite most?

Pages with clear, specific, verifiable information: definitions, statistics with sources, comparison tables, documentation and how-to steps. Recent publication dates help on fast-moving topics. Long brand stories and vague feature lists are cited least.

Can we pay Perplexity to be cited?

Paid placements, where offered, are separate from organic sources and are labeled as sponsored. The numbered sources in a normal answer cannot be bought. They are chosen by relevance and quality, which is exactly what our work improves.
